Course overview

Understand how Bitcoin mining works — proof of work, SHA-256 hashing, difficulty adjustment, and block rewards. Then compare ASIC hardware mining vs. cloud/SaaS mining platforms and which makes sense for you.

How Bitcoin Mining Works

Bitcoin mining is the process of adding new transactions to the blockchain by solving a computationally expensive puzzle. Here's the full picture: 1. Transactions: Users broadcast transactions to the network 2. Mempool: Unconfirmed transactions sit in the memory pool 3. Block Assembly: Miners pick profitable transactions (by fee) and assemble a candidate block 4. Proof of Work: Find a nonce such that SHA256(SHA256(blockheader)) starts with N leading zeros 5. Block Broadcast: Winner broadcasts the solved block; other miners verify and accept it 6. Reward: Winning miner receives the block subsidy (3.125 BTC post-2024 halving) + transaction fees 7. Difficulty Adjustment: Every 2016 blocks (2 weeks), the network adjusts difficulty so blocks average 10 minutes Key metric: Hashrate — how many SHA-256 double-hash attempts per second. The Bitcoin network runs at 600 EH/s (6 × 10²⁰ hashes/second) as of 2024.

ASIC Hardware Mining

Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) are chips designed exclusively to compute SHA-256 as fast as possible. Today's ASICs are billions of times more efficient than CPUs or GPUs. Top ASIC Miners (2024): | Model | Hashrate | Power | Efficiency | Price | |-------|----------|-------|------------|-------| | Antminer S21 XP Hyd | 473 TH/s | 5,676W | 12 J/TH | $10,000 | | Antminer S21 Pro | 234 TH/s | 3,510W | 15 J/TH | $5,000 | | WhatsMiner M60S++ | 230 TH/s | 3,450W | 15 J/TH | $4,500 | | Antminer S19j Pro | 104 TH/s | 3,068W | 29.5 J/TH | $1,200 (used) | Setup requirements: 240V+ power supply (dedicated circuit) Proper ventilation (ASICs generate 1,500–5,000W of heat) Mining pool connection (Stratum v2 protocol) Static IP or DHCP reservation for management Noise: 70–85 dB (wear ear protection)

Cloud & SaaS Mining Platforms

Cloud mining lets you rent hashrate from a remote data center — no hardware, no electricity bill, no noise. You pay a contract fee and receive BTC payouts. Major Cloud Mining Platforms: | Platform | Type | Min Contract | Notes | |----------|------|-------------|-------| | NiceHash | Hash marketplace | $50 | Buy/sell hashrate, BTC payouts | | Genesis Mining | Cloud mining | $200 | Long-term contracts, multiple coins | | ECOS | Cloud + physical | $50 | Armenia-based, 5-50 TH/s contracts | | StormGain | Exchange + mining | Free! | Mine with idle device, earn USDT | | BTC.com Pool | Solo pool | 0.05% fee | Professional miners | Cloud mining economics: Critical: Most cloud mining contracts have ROI below electricity-adjusted hosting. Do the math: Contract cost ÷ daily BTC earned = breakeven days If breakeven contract duration → loss Network difficulty increases over time → earnings decrease
